Mobility guide reviewed on 11 July 2026. Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter covers a broad part of Ciutat Vella and does not have one definitive arrival station. The most suitable option depends on the exact destination, current works, lift availability and each traveller’s needs.
This page uses official sources. It does not certify a fully step-free journey or access to any particular doorway. Check the journey planner and live notices before setting out.
Main stations around the Gothic Quarter
Metro line L3 follows La Rambla, with three commonly used reference points: Catalunya at the upper end, Liceu near the middle and Drassanes towards the waterfront. Line L4 stops at Jaume I on the Via Laietana side. These stations are not interchangeable. Choosing one from the neighbourhood name alone can add an unnecessary walk.
The TMB pages for line L3 and line L4 show connections and service issues. Put the precise destination into the planner rather than assuming which station is closest.
Plan with today’s information, not a memorised route
The official TMB journey planner combines metro, TMB and AMB buses, FGC, Rodalies and Tram. Travellers can set a date and time, compare alternatives, and prioritise fewer changes or less walking. Its preferences also include accessible metro stations and TMB bus lines.
Construction work, a lift outage or a service change can alter a route on the day. Review the TMB service alerts immediately before travelling.
What “accessible station” means
According to the TMB accessibility information checked on 11 July 2026, 156 of 165 stations have lifts and nine are still awaiting adaptation. Trains mark access doors and provide visual and audible information. An adapted station, however, does not guarantee that every lift will be working at a particular moment.
Each station page can show lift status and the recommended entrance for an accessible journey. Check the origin station, every connection and the final station. If a connection is not accessible or a lift is out of service, ask the planner for another combination.
Bus travel can reduce the number of changes
TMB says its bus network has been adapted for people with reduced mobility since 2007. Vehicles provide a ramp, a kneeling system, priority seats and spaces for wheelchairs, authorised mobility scooters and pushchairs. Even so, a particular service may be diverted and a stop may be moved temporarily during works.
Compare metro and bus options against the exact destination. When access is essential, allow extra time and check the service. Network-wide adaptation is not proof that one departure or stop will meet every need at that time.
Temporary alert: the L1–L3 connection at Catalunya
Update dated 11 July 2026: TMB has closed the connecting passage between L1 and L3 at Catalunya from 6 July through 6 September, both dates included. The official notice says that passengers must make the transfer at street level, following the signs. Re-entering and validating the same ticket does not deduct another journey.
This change is particularly relevant for anyone who needs an accessible itinerary or wants to avoid additional walking. Do not assume the usual interchange is operating; review the alternatives TMB gives for the relevant date and time. This paragraph must be updated or removed after 6 September 2026.
La Rambla works can also change the final walk
La Rambla’s transformation continues in phases until 2027. The municipal construction maps show active sections and temporary movement arrangements, and the City Council warns that they are adjusted as the work advances. A metro exit that once appeared direct may no longer be the most comfortable choice during a particular phase.
This guide does not give turn-by-turn directions. Consult the map, follow local signs and separately confirm that the final pedestrian section is appropriate for your needs.
The last part of the route needs its own check
A journey-planner result that uses adapted stations does not by itself verify the route from the exit to a building. This guide has not audited gradients, kerbs, surfaces, widths, temporary works or door access. Ask the destination about its actual conditions, and do not describe a complete route as “step-free” without documented verification.
For HashQuarters, the Visit us page should be the only internal reference for public location information that has been verified. An enquiry, a map result or arrival in the neighbourhood does not guarantee admission or access to a private association. Do not travel expecting to enter without express confirmation.
A quick checklist before leaving
- Enter the exact destination and actual travel time in TMB’s planner.
- Select accessible-journey preferences when they are needed.
- Check lifts, connections and service alerts.
- Review the current La Rambla construction maps.
- Confirm the final street section and building access separately.

Frequently asked questions
Which metro station serves Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter?
It depends on the precise destination. Catalunya, Liceu and Drassanes are on L3; Jaume I is on L4. Use the official planner with a specific address.
How can I search for an accessible journey?
TMB’s journey-planner preferences include accessible metro stations and TMB bus lines. The real-time status of lifts at each station must then be checked separately.
Are all TMB buses adapted?
TMB says its network has been adapted for people with reduced mobility since 2007. Travellers should still check diversions, the specific stop and any current service issues.
Does this guide guarantee a step-free route to the destination?
No. Station adaptation does not certify the street section or entry to a building. Those elements need separate verification.
Does reaching the area mean I can enter HashQuarters?
No. Reaching the neighbourhood, sending an enquiry or seeing a map result does not amount to admission. A private association requires express confirmation under its rules.
